The word "Tancook" is derived from the indigenous Mi'kmaq language and it means "facing the open sea".
Wishing Stones is located in Mi'kma'ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq Nation.
The island's coastal waters were once seasonal fishing grounds for the Mi'kmaq, long before being settled
by European immigrants in the early 1800s.
As you enjoy the natural beauty and community of this island, we ask all visitors to respect its land and
the surrounding sea.
We recognize the Mi'kmaq as the original and ongoing stewards of this territory and pledge to support local reconciliation through mindful business practices.
